THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
ON RONALD REAGAN PARKWAY

It happens on the on-ramp. You merge onto Ronald Reagan Parkway, the turbo spools up, and the check engine light comes on. Nothing feels diffrent. The car pulls fine. So you drive to the parts store on Scenic Highway, they plug in a scaner, and you leave with a code number and no answer. Thats where most of our calls start.

A steady light means find out this week. A flashing light means a misfire is happening right now, and raw feul is going into the catalytic converter. Pull over, ease off, and call us before you cook a part that costs alot to replace. And if your Gwinnett emissions test is comming up, the light has to be off and the monitors ready, or the car fails.

Oxygen and Lambda Sensors

The most common cause we see. A tired O2 sensor makes the engine run rich, drink fuel and fail emmissions. We watch it switch on live data before we condem it. When its done, we fit an OEM or OEM-equivalent sensor, not a bargain one that dies in a year.

Boost and Vacuum Leaks

A split charge pipe or cracked hose lets unmetered air in. The engine runs lean and stumbles. We see it every week on the BMW N54 and N55 and the Volkswagen EA888. We pressure test the hole intake. Then we fix the leak, insted of guessing at a sensor.

Coils and Spark Plugs

A flashing light is almost always a misfire, and on a high-mileage engine that usualy means a coil or plug. We find the dead cylinder on the factory software, swap the coil to prove it, then fit plugs in the rigth heat range. Dont keep driving on a flashing light.

EVAP and the Fuel Cap

The EVAP system keeps fuel vapor in the tank, and a tiny leak sets the light. Half the time its a loose or worn gas cap. The rest is a purge valve or a craked line. A smoke test shows the exact leak point, so we never swap parts at randem.

Catalytic Converter Codes

P0420 and P0430 say the converter is not cleaning the exhaust. It might be the cat. Just as often its the upstream O2 sensor lying to the computer. We compair the front and rear sensors on live data first. A new converter is expensive, so we make shure before we order one.

MAF, MAP and Cam Sensors

Airflow, manifold pressure and cam sensors fail often on German engines. We check the reading against factory spec wile the engine runs. If the sensor is right and the reading is wrong, the fault is somewhere else. That is were engine repair or an electrical fault comes in, a chaffed wire or a bad ground.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

A steady light is normaly safe for a few days, but get it read this week. A flashing light is a misfire, and it can ruin the catalitic converter in miles, not months. Pull over and call us.

Can I just clear the code and see if it comes back?

You can, but it fixes nothing. The light comes back becuase the fault is still there. Worse, clearing the code resets the readyness monitors, and a car with monitors not ready fails the Gwinnett emissions test.

Why does the light keep coming back after it's cleared?

Because nobody fixed the cause. A parts-store scan gives you a code, and a code is a symtom. When the light returns after a new sensor, the sensor was probly never the problem. We test first, so it stays off.

What does it mean when the light is flashing?

An active misfire. Unburned fuel is pouring into the exhaust and overheating the catalytic converter, a part that costs more then the repair that caused it. Stop driving, tow it if you have too, and call us.

Why not just use the free scanner at the parts store?

Do, if you like, then bring us the code. A parts-store scanner reads engine codes only and misses the other moduels. Ours speaks the factory language and shows live data. So we test the sensor rather then trust it.

Will the light fail my Gwinnett emissions test?

Yes. In Gwinnett County the light being on is an automatic fail, and a car whose monitors arent ready gets turned away. Fix the cause first, then drive a few days so the moniters reset, then test. We'll tell you when its ready.
